Firefighters - Toddler crafts, activities and resources

My son has been fascinated by fire engines since he was tiny, in fact one of his first words was 'nee nor'. They are amazing vehicles to watch, and a toy fire engine can provide so many opportunities for role play. It's also good to take the opportunity while playing to talk about fire safety with young children.

Fireman crafts

Make a really simple fireman's hat from a decorated paper plate.

Use a child's handprint to make a really sweet firemen picture.

Here are some fireman printables to make a selection of different firefighters.

Firefighter activities

Your local fire station will be more than happy to arrange a home visit from a fireman to talk about fire safety with you and your child. They can test and install smoke alarms, as well as offering general fire safety advice. Most fire stations also hold regular open days, and local fetes and carnivals will often have a fire engine in the procession or on display, maybe even the chance to go for a ride in a fire engine.

This page has lots of firefighter activites, including lots of songs to sing with your child.

If your toddler likes firemen they probably watch Fireman Sam. Here are lots of Fireman Sam activities, including colouring sheets to print.

Fireman books

I'd like to be a Fireman - Learn with your toddler about what a fireman does.

Even Firefighters Go to the Potty - Potty training isn't always the easiest thing to do, if your child loves firemen then this might make it a little easier!

Sound the Siren! - Toddlers are fascinated by the sound of a fire engine, and this Fireman Sam books comes with a lovely button to press.

Firefighter toys

Fireman Fancy Dress Pyjamas 3-4 Years sam - These pajamas are fantastic if you don't want to spend lots of money on a firefighter costume that won't be worn, and they don't just need to be for bed!

VTech Toot Toot Driver Fire Engine - A great first fire engine toy for younger toddlers.

Pintoy Wooden Fire Engine - Older toddlers will enjoy playing with this more realistic fire engine. There are also lots of related toys in the range, like a fire station and firemen.

Big Fire Engine - A lovely simple and good quality fire engine jigsaw.

Little Fire Engine (Igloo Books Ltd Busy Day Board Book) - We love this sturdy book which opens out to make a track which the wind up fire engine included can run about on.

  1. They have that Pintoy fire engine (and the fire station and some firefighters) at our local Children's Centre. Emily loves playing with them.
